4 Natural Ways to Produce More Breastmilk

Breastfeeding is an emotional decision. Typically when you’re making that decision, you’re pregnant and hormonal. Once you have the baby, amp up the hormones by 1,000 and you’re left with one dramatic mama. Needless to say, when you add a screaming and hungry baby to the mix, things just don’t look good. This was my experience just 4 weeks ago, but I learned 4 Natural Ways to Produce More Breastmilk fast!

I didn’t have much time, y’all! I had a baby who wanted to eat more than I could make and a decision to give up and formula feed or keep trying. Needless to say, I went with the never give up option. Although I had to break down and give her formula to supplement my milk for the first two days I was in the hospital, I was determined not to let this be the “end all be all.” Once I arrived home, I went to work on amping up the supply. I allowed baby to nurse for as long as she was content, which was never more than 5 minutes before she started screaming her head off. After this, I would settle her with a bottle, and when she was done, pump for the amount of time it took her to finish the bottle. I did this because I figured it simulated the time she would need to eat and I wanted to tell my breasts to supply my body with that amount of milk. During that time, I was a frazzled mess and stress doesn’t help, so I pumped while listening to soothing music, sitting in a relaxing position, and thinking about my baby or looking at photos of her. Sometimes I would get only an ounce or just a tad bit more per bottle, but I kept my thoughts on the outcome I wanted. So don’t stop mama, keep going. I pumped every 2-3 hours. Basically, each time she woke up to eat.

On day 3, I had my husband go to Walgreens and pick up some Mother’s Milk Tea. I used two tea bags per cup and drank it twice per day with nothing other than one teaspoon of agave nectar. By the next morning, I was pumping 2-3 ounces per bottle. Now, that’s not a dramatic increase, but when your baby is few days to a couple of weeks old, that’s enough for one feeding. Fill two bottles at that rate, that’s at least 2 full feedings per day. If the baby sleeps a bit longer and you can get in an extra pump session, you’ll have 3-4 full feedings per day. 3) Fenugreek Powder or Tablets

Alright, my disclaimer before I begin is that this powder was not my first choice, but it was the best choice. Who knew? Fenugreek has a bitter taste, which is why I attempted avoiding it. But, if I wanted more milk, I felt I needed to do what a mama needed to do. Before I went to bed on the 4th night, I put one tablespoon of this powder in my tea. It was hard to get down, which is why I suggest the tablets as the alternative, but it was the most effective in terms of results. By morning, my breasts were pretty much engorged and hard to feed my baby with. Rather than crying because I had no milk, she cried because I had too much and her little mouth was too small to latch on. Basically, I went from one extreme to the other, but I probably could’ve avoided this had I pumped after her feeding in the middle of the night. To remedy the issue, I had to shower to soften them, but when I pumped, I was able to get 4-5 ounces of milk per bottle. After that one time, I never needed the powder again because I kept pumping the milk out so my body would make more at the same capacity. Hopefully, if you get to this, it will be just as effective for you.

4) Drink Water

This sounds so cliche, but water is the mother of all bodily functions, and life! If you are not adequately hydrated, it will affect your milk supply, as well as cause other issues. I know as a new mom, it’s hard enough just keeping up with the baby’s needs, and getting some good rest. I get it….eating healthy meals and drinking water are not at the top of the list. No lie, I tend to have a bottle and 2-4 cups at any given time on my nightstand, cups in the bathroom, and a bottle in my family room.
